1 part of the Capital Beltway sees more motor vehicle accidents

On Behalf of | Jul 30, 2019 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Most Silver Spring residents travel the Capital Beltway at one time or another. Even when they don’t witness motor vehicle accidents, they hear about them in the news. The number of crashes that occur each year may not surprise those who live in the area, but there is one stretch of the highway that seems to see more accidents than the others. In fact, between Sept. 1, 2017 and Aug. 31, 2018, the Capital Beltway saw around 3,463 wrecks.

The highest concentration of those accidents took place near or on the exit ramps closest to Georgia Avenue, which is the section between Silver Spring and Bethesda. WTOP’s Traffic Center estimates that during the period above, 201 accidents occurred in this one section. The next closest number of incidents at 155 occurred around Connecticut Avenue on the Capital Beltway.

The Outer Loop appears to see more crashes than the Inner Loop, but not by much. One theory for the high number of accidents is the windy nature of the section of roadway and the number of people who travel it. Sources also believe the numbers to be higher than the recorded data indicate because not everyone reports accidents, such as in minor fender benders.

Many Silver Spring residents would not choose to live anywhere else, but when it comes to driving here, they may wish they were in another area. Driving nearly everywhere comes with risks, but that danger appears to rise in this area. Residents who suffer serious injuries or lose loved ones in the motor vehicle accidents that happen here may have the chance to pursue restitution for the financial and other losses that accompany them.
