Felony charges re fatal Maryland motor vehicle accident

When driving on Maryland roadways, there are a variety of different types of drivers. Even though most people are committed to taking measures to ensure their personal safety as well as the safety of those in their vicinity, there are others who take risky actions, such as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, that put both themselves and others at risk. In fact, law enforcement officials believe that a recent fatal motor vehicle accident was the result of an impaired driver.

The incident happened during the afternoon hours of a day in mid-September. According to reports, a 29-year-old man driving a pickup truck was spotted by several witnesses as driving recklessly. Witnesses claim that he was tailgating and speeding before striking a sedan that was stopped in the area between the parkway and an exit ramp.

Rescue workers say that the couple inside the stopped sedan were trapped when they arrived. Unfortunately, a 73-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The second occupant of the vehicle, an 80-year-old man, was transported to the hospital with critical injuries. The pickup driver, who suffered serious injuries in the crash, reportedly admitted to law enforcement officers that he had mixed alcohol with prescription medication prior to the accident.

While a family is left grieving the unexpected, likely preventable death of their loved one, the driver of the pickup faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges related to the motor vehicle accident. Unfortunately, accidents such as this often leave Maryland residents facing an uncertain financial situation as they attempt to cope with medical bills, lost wages and funeral expenses. As such, they may choose to file a personal injury lawsuit against those believed to be responsible. An attorney with experience with such cases can help victims — including surviving family members in the event of a fatality — fully understand their legal options in the aftermath of such a tragedy.
