Lawsuit claims medical malpractice led to blindness

On Behalf of | Feb 11, 2020 | Medical Malpractice |

People seek medical care for a variety of different reasons, ranging from health maintenance to treatment of emergent conditions. Regardless of the reason for seeking care, patients in Maryland and across the country have the reasonable expectation that doctors will appropriately diagnose and treat their medical conditions — especially those that could lead to significant long-term harm if not treated. Unfortunately, a medical malpractice lawsuit filed in another state claims that physicians failed to adequately treat a woman, leaving her with blindness.

Reports indicate that the plaintiff in the case sought treatment from one of the defendants in Sept. 2015. At that time, she was suffering from papilledema, a condition in which the optic nerve swells because of increased pressure related to the brain. She claims that the doctor failed to initiate emergency action, instead telling her to wait until she saw a neurosurgeon.

However, when she saw the neurosurgeon four days later, she claims that he also failed to take emergency action. As a result, she says, she suffered blindness, loss of employment, and extreme pain and suffering, among other harm. Her lawsuit did not specify a dollar amount being sought.

In a response filed as a result of the medical malpractice lawsuit, the defendants denied the accusations against them. Unfortunately, an incident in which a health care provider — or multiple ones — fail to adequately assess the seriousness of a situation can ultimately have serious, long-term impacts on patients in Maryland and across the country. If their failure was the result of negligence, patients have the option of filing a personal injury lawsuit against the responsible parties. An experienced attorney can help these victims throughout the process.
