Tips for Safer Highway Driving

On Behalf of | Aug 25, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Driving seems to be more dangerous lately. In fact, according to the NHTSA, the incident rate of car accidents has risen more than 10% in the last year alone.

Driving at high speeds in dense traffic requires a special set of skills. Following these safety tips can help you avoid highway accidents and collisions.

Take special care with merges

If you are merging onto the highway, accelerate quickly so that you can safely enter the flow of traffic. Going too slow, or failing to accelerate aggressively, can cause accidents. If others are attempting to merge, adjust your speed to allow them to safely enter your lane. Do not rush to get ahead, leaving the other car nowhere to go. This creates a dangerous situation for no reason.

Do not merge or change lanes unnecessarily. Staying in the same lane is the safest option on the highway, so be sure to only change lanes when you must.

Also, be sure to monitor your blind spots. Cars can hide there and surprise you by switching lanes unexpectedly. This leads to many accidents.

Use extra care around emergencies

If a car is in the breakdown lane, do our best to safely merge to the middle or left lane to provide a wide berth. This is also true for emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road. If emergency vehicles are traveling past you, try to safely merge to the right to allow the use of the left lane.

Taking extra precautions when merging and around emergency vehicles are two ways to avoid many highway accidents.
